The title is drawn from a discovery made in a South African cave three years ago. There, scientists found the oldest known artist’s workshop. Our early ancestors, through a cunning and complicated process involving ochre, bones and urine, were producing pigments for paint – far earlier than we had previously thought.
Today, over 100,000 years later, artists continue to use paint and are still discovering new uses and applications for it. Through the work of six contemporary painters, Ochre, Bones and Urine showcases painting as a resilient and relevant medium that pushes boundaries, uncovers new perspectives and sheds light on what it means to live in this world today.
